![]() Anisocoria may be a sign of a disorder in the eye, nerve, blood vessel, or brain. This symptom may also occur to people who have equal pupil size occasionally. Maybe it would be the best for you to report this side effect of uneven pupils, or anisocoria, to your doctor, maybe he could switch you to some other medicine. In some people, there may be normal variations in the sizes of the pupils at birth, of which the variation range may be from 0.5 to 1 mm. I believe you will feel strange relief to find others with this uneven pupil dilation had been ever diagnosed with a tumor or some such. But I have heard it is harmless, as one person’s physician said, so perhaps you can continue. I asked a lot about it and I found our anisocoria is due to Lexapro. Also, I really liked the results I was getting from Lexapro and hated to have to switch to any other medicine. My doctor decided that it was due to the venlafaxine and switched me to Lexapro, but I was wondering if it will cause the same effect. I did get a fairly bad tension headache in the muscles that go from my neck to the sides of my face. I first noticed my right pupil quite larger than the other about three weeks after having started taking Effexor, and that was few months ago. Table 2.Anisocoria is the medical term for uneven pupil size, and appears in about 20% of the population. Reprinted with permission from Bell AL, Rodes ME, Collier Kellar L. (C) Normal red reflex in the right eye and no reflex in the left eye, which occurs when the reflection is blocked by an opacity such as a cataract. (B) Normal red reflex in the right eye, and abnormal, diminished red reflex in the left eye, which is most commonly caused by refractive error between the eyes, but can also be caused by a more serious pathology (e.g., retinoblastoma). Interpretation of red reflex test results in a newborn. ![]() Regardless of red reflex findings, all newborns with a family history of retinoblastoma, cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal abnormalities should be referred to an ophthalmologist experienced in the examination of children because of the high risk of serious eye abnormalities. 14, 16 An abnormal red reflex result warrants urgent referral to an ophthalmologist. Anisocoria is a relatively common condition, and causes vary from benign physiologic anisocoria to potentially life-threatening emergencies. It gets larger in dim light and smaller in bright light. The pupil is the black part in the center of the eye. 14, 16 Table 2 gives a differential diagnosis of leukokoria. Anisocoria is a condition characterized by unequal pupil sizes 1). The color of the reflex may be different among ethnic groups because of varying amounts of pigmentation in the ocular fundus however, the reflex should not be white. A red reflex result is normal if there is symmetry in both eyes without opacities, white spots, or dark spots ( Figure 3 15 ). Light should project onto both eyes simultaneously. The red reflex test is performed by using an ophthalmoscope, with the lens power set at 0 and the examiner standing approximately 18 inches away. Subconjunctival hemorrhages from blood vessel rupture are also a common benign finding that may take weeks to resolve. ![]() Eye protection with safety glasses, goggles, face shields and avoidance of dangerous situations can help prevent work. battery acid, lye drain cleaner, etc.) can cause vision threatening eye injuries. 14 The visual acuity of newborns is approximately 20/400, and a dysconjugate gaze is normal in the first two to three months of life. Physical/chemical: Major eye injuries are caused by blunt and sharp trauma, with or without globe penetration/ rupture. Often associated with a genetic disorder.
